So we found lots of little (harmless) vegetable bugs in our bok choy … so the most obvious next step would be to stick them under the microscope! Lots of variety (or lots of protein, as some, but not definitely not I, would say).
From what I’ve seen online, I think these are: aphids (first picture with red eyes) and cabbage looper (the pictures that look like worms with hairs). I haven’t found out what the one with wings is (and that one also looks like it has a stinger??). The last row of pictures is what I believe to be a dried-up aphid from not being put under a cover slip with water soon enough.
I added PVA glue to make my own (DIY) permanent (hopefully) mount for all these bugs. Hopefully, there won’t be too many bubbles. It should help a lot with the worm because the microscope was having trouble focusing on something with so many different heights. The smaller ones, like aphids, might get a little lost in the process of adding PVA glue and getting rid of the excess. Next post coming soon about my second permanent slide!
